Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson on the Replacements Reunion

Replacement’s legends Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson confirmed last year that a reunion was on the cards. The reunion with Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson (now a member of Guns N’ Roses) came after Slim Dunlap, the Replacements’ guitarist from 1987 to 1991, suffered a severe stroke in February of last year. The image above is the confirmed cover art. Only 250 copies will be made, and they will be auctioned off. Read up more about it on the official Songs For Slim website.

The Black Keys and The Flaming Lips Announce Joint Tour

Well this is great news! Two of the best live acts around, The Black Keys and The Flaming Lips, have decided to hit the road together for a short tour this Spring. I was lucky enough to catch The Black Keys last year in the O2 Dublin as part of their El Camino tour and it was such a good concert, they are so tight live. I managed to see The Flaming Lips a couple of years ago at Vicar Street and to this day it remains in the top three gigs I’ve ever been too.
More good news, in a recent interview with Mojo Magazine, Dan Auerbach discussed that the band were ready to start recording a new album: “We’re going to start making the new album in the second week of January and we’re hoping to have it done by some time in March.” He also added, “The record isn’t written yet, we’ll do it when we get into the studio. This is when we both work best, when we’re dying to make an album. All of our records take place in the studio, in that we make stuff up while we’re there.”

Young Wonder – To You

Cannot believe I am only discovering this song/band now. Young Wonder are an electronic pop duo from Cork, Ireland. The reason I’m hitting myself repeatedly over the head is because they sound like a fusion of a few bands I love right now. Their most recent single ‘To You’ was released back on December 3, and it sounds like Purity Ring, Gold Panda and Björk all decided to record some music together. Absolutely brilliant! Are they Bagpipe samples!?

HAIM – Falling

Shout out to Pigeons & Planes for turning my attention to this new cut by the excellent HAIM. It’s called ‘Falling’ and the ladies recently premiered it live at Maida Vale studios recently for BBC Radio 1. It’s another instantly likable track from the group of sisters with some awesome guitar solo’s thrown into the mix too. One thing is for certain, HAIM really can nail an infectious pop hook. Cannot wait for their debut to drop this year. Check out some of their other hits below.

M.I.A. To Release Matangi In April

M.I.A. has announced that her fourth album Matangi will be released on April 15. The album was originally penned for a 2012 release but it never materialized due to “differences” between M.I.A. and her record label Interscope Records. Thankfully that’s all settled now and hopefully the upcoming album has more of this!

Laces – Beachcombers EP

London-based duo Ben Walker and Patrick Wanzala-Ryan, aka Laces, release their debut Beachcombers EP on January 25. Patrick was kind enough to send me an early copy of the 5-song EP earlier today and I’ve been playing it since. I posted the brilliant ‘Screens’ last week so I was pretty psyched to hear the rest of Beachcombers and I wasn’t disappointed. They band’s talent for making hypnotic and strangly addictive acoustic-drenched ambiance simply cannot be ignored and there is some strong material to be found on this EP. At the moment, my favourite is ‘Ghost Waking’ but the dual vocals on ‘Lift’ have me hooked. I don’t have a link to stream the entire EP just yet but in the meantime, stream ‘Screens’ below.

Plaid Dragon – Dog Physics

Springfield Missouri-based Plaid Dragon have a lovely new EP out at the moment called Dog Physics. The title track is the song I liked the most. Inge Chiles vocals, strikingly similar to that of Sharon Van Etten, sound just beautiful as she lulls us over a gentle finger-picked acoustic guitar. The song seemingly drifts along with ease, before an urgent burst of percussion and guitar, before settling gently back into what feels almost like a lullaby. Head over to Plaid Dragon’s Bandcamp page and pick it up.

Cheatahs – The Swan

Here’s the latest from London-based four piece Cheatahs, it’s called ‘The Swan’. They recently signed to Wichita Recordings and will release their debut EP Sans later this month. ‘The Swan’ is the albums opening track and as well as being an awesome throwback to early 90’s style indie rock, it’s an absolutely bangin’ track. The guitars are loud and that swirling riff throughout makes me want to thrash something. Try to contain yourself from air-drumming.

Wih’lo – Unbreak

‘Unbreak’ is the latest cut from eighteen year old Chicago-based producer Wih’lo. Those of you interested in the music of early James Blake, XXYYXX, Mount Kimbie and Koreless will definitely enjoy this track. Unbreak is a new track for the latest The Soul Electronic compilation and it’s easily his finest work to date. It unfolds ever so slowly, with Wih’lo throwing in some warped R&B vocal samples (that everyone seems to be hitting up these days) before reaching it’s euphoric climax, a swirling mix of looped vocals and sparkling beats. Expect to hear a lot more from this producer in 2013.

Angel Olsen – ‘Tiniest Seed’ & ‘Sweet Dreams’

Angel Olsen has released two videos beautifully shot in 16mm. One is for the Half Way Home  track ‘Tiniest Seed’ and the other is for ‘Sweet Dreams’ a previously unreleased song. It took me a long while to properly appreciate last years Half Way Home, too long, but it’s been spinning on repeat here for a while now. The videos below are the result of a collaboration between filmmakers Randy Sterling Hunter, Ashley Connor, Zia Anger, and Olsen. Olsen will release the Sleepwalker 7″, featuring “Sweet Dreams” on January 15th through Sixteen Tambourines.
