The Knife Announce Live Shows

Excellent news! The Knife are official heading back on the road and have announced two shows, their first since 2006’s Silent Shout. They’ll play at Vega in Copenhagen on May 12 and 13. These dates will follow the release of their long-awaited new album, Shaking the Habitual, which is out April 8. This bodes well for more European gigs, fingers crossed.

Atoms for Peace – Judge Jury and Executioner

Zane Lowe hosted Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, and Joey Waronker on his BBC Radio 1 slot this afternoon and premiered a track off Atoms For Peace’s long-anticipated Amok LP. The track is called ‘Judge, Jury and Executioner’ and it’s simply fantastic. Atoms for Peace also features the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea and percussionist Mauro Refosco.

SBTRKT – Hold On / Migration

SBTRKT dropped a live album on iTunes today, with little or no fuss, simply entitled ‘Live’. He also shared a video performance of Hold On/Migration which features vocalist/producer Sampha. The sound and footage for the release comes from two shows he played at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire last October, which were filmed using 12 different cameras. It looks amazing.

Wolf Alice – Fluffy

Emerging London-based outfit Wolf Alice provided us with the perfect introduction last year when they released the brilliant ‘Leaving You‘. They’re back again with a new track called ‘Fluffy’, which is to be their official debut single. ‘Leaving You’ was a lot more of a softer psych-rock affair, but without being too heavy ‘Fluffy’ is more of a headbanger. The onslaught of guitars are blistering and, in Ellie Roswell, Wolf Alice have a truly excellent frontwomen with a vocal confidence and charisma reminiscent of Karen O. Ones to watch.

Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson on the Replacements Reunion

Replacement’s legends Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson confirmed last year that a reunion was on the cards. The reunion with Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson (now a member of Guns N’ Roses) came after Slim Dunlap, the Replacements’ guitarist from 1987 to 1991, suffered a severe stroke in February of last year. The image above is the confirmed cover art. Only 250 copies will be made, and they will be auctioned off. Read up more about it on the official Songs For Slim website.

The Black Keys and The Flaming Lips Announce Joint Tour

Well this is great news! Two of the best live acts around, The Black Keys and The Flaming Lips, have decided to hit the road together for a short tour this Spring. I was lucky enough to catch The Black Keys last year in the O2 Dublin as part of their El Camino tour and it was such a good concert, they are so tight live. I managed to see The Flaming Lips a couple of years ago at Vicar Street and to this day it remains in the top three gigs I’ve ever been too.
More good news, in a recent interview with Mojo Magazine, Dan Auerbach discussed that the band were ready to start recording a new album: “We’re going to start making the new album in the second week of January and we’re hoping to have it done by some time in March.” He also added, “The record isn’t written yet, we’ll do it when we get into the studio. This is when we both work best, when we’re dying to make an album. All of our records take place in the studio, in that we make stuff up while we’re there.”

Young Wonder – To You

Cannot believe I am only discovering this song/band now. Young Wonder are an electronic pop duo from Cork, Ireland. The reason I’m hitting myself repeatedly over the head is because they sound like a fusion of a few bands I love right now. Their most recent single ‘To You’ was released back on December 3, and it sounds like Purity Ring, Gold Panda and Björk all decided to record some music together. Absolutely brilliant! Are they Bagpipe samples!?

HAIM – Falling

Shout out to Pigeons & Planes for turning my attention to this new cut by the excellent HAIM. It’s called ‘Falling’ and the ladies recently premiered it live at Maida Vale studios recently for BBC Radio 1. It’s another instantly likable track from the group of sisters with some awesome guitar solo’s thrown into the mix too. One thing is for certain, HAIM really can nail an infectious pop hook. Cannot wait for their debut to drop this year. Check out some of their other hits below.

M.I.A. To Release Matangi In April

M.I.A. has announced that her fourth album Matangi will be released on April 15. The album was originally penned for a 2012 release but it never materialized due to “differences” between M.I.A. and her record label Interscope Records. Thankfully that’s all settled now and hopefully the upcoming album has more of this!
